Our Opponents – Penybont FC

Monday’s opponents were one of the standout teams in the JD Cymru Premier in the previous campaign. Penybont finished as the runners up to the eventual treble winners The New Saints in the 24/25 JD Cymru Premier campaign.

Collecting 64 points last season, Penybont recorded two impressive victories against TNS and only lost 6 times during the 32 game league campaign.

Following their 2nd place finish, Penybont qualified for Europe but were unfortunately eliminated in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa Conference League by Kauno Žalgiris.

So far this season Penybont have picked up six points from a possible nine in the league, their most recent win coming away at Barry Town United on Friday night. A dramatic late goal from hattrick hero Noah Daley in the 94th minute secured all three points for Penybont.

Of course there’s one of a few familiar faces in the dugout for Penybont with Reds legend Rhys Griffiths continuing his impressive tenure at the DragonBet Stadium.

Rhys scored 180 goals in 181 league games for the Reds and was our top goalscorer for six seasons. The prolific forward also played a key part in our 2007/08 Welsh Premier League and 2010/11 Welsh Cup winning campaigns.

Head to Head

We last met Penybont in the JD Welsh Cup back in November 2023 on what was a memorable evening for the Reds.

A 3-3 draw then saw the game go to penalties with the Reds defeating Penybont thanks to a superb showing in the shootout by Scott Coughlan – saving Keyon Reffell’s penalty to send the Reds through.

Before the cup meeting, our most recent meetings with Penybont came in our last appearance in the Welsh Premier League back in the 17/18 season.

The Reds were victorious 0-4 away from home and defeated Penybont 1-0 at Stebonheath Park during that campaign.

Player To Watch

Noah Daley

Coming into the game against the Reds fresh off being the hattrick hero for Penybont on Friday, Daley joined the club in the summer and already has 4 goals in all competitions.

His first coming during Penybonts Nathaniel MG Cup victory over Trefelin before netting a hattrick in his first league start for his new club.

The 23 year old was an impressive goalscoring threat for Carmarthen Town in the second tier and is looking to continue that form in the top flight.

Honourable Mention – Chris Venables

Another familiar face for Reds supporters,  Venables was with us between 2009 and 2012 and was also part of our Welsh Cup winning team alongside current boss Griffiths.

Now aged 40, Venables is still a threat in front of goal and is now into his 24th consecutive season in the Welsh top flight – having made close to 600 appearances.

The forward scored 9 goals for Penybont last season and continues to demonstrate his experience at this level in a thriving Penybont side.
